Northern Sweet White Mulberry Tree (morus alba)

Cold Hardy to Zone 5 – Very fast growing and early to produce fruit, generally at 6 months of age. Native to central China it was introduced into the Americas for silk worm production during colonial times. Recently, it has become widely naturalized in urban areas of the US. Quality of the fruit is excellent and the tree has a spreading habit with large dinner plate sized, heart-shaped leaves. Botanically the fruit is not a berry but a collective fruit in appearance like a swollen loganberry. When the flowers are pollinated they and their fleshy bases begin to swell. Ultimately they become completely altered in texture and color becoming succulent fat and full of juice. Berries often darken when mature.
