Northern Red Giant Mulberry Tree (morus rubra)

Cold Hardy to Zone 5 – Native to North America from Canada to Florida and west to South Dakota and Texas it has large real green roughly textured leaves. Inconspicuous small flowers bloom as leaves emerge in spring. Very sweet dark purple red berries are great for jams, pies or eating right off the tree. Quality of the fruit is excellent and the tree has a spreading habit with large dinner plate sized, heart-shaped leaves. Botanically the fruit is not a berry but a collective fruit in appearance like a swollen loganberry. When the flowers are pollinated they and their fleshy bases begin to swell. Ultimately they become completely altered in texture and color becoming succulent fat and full of juice. Berries turn darker when mature.
