White Sapote Tree (casimiroa edulis)

Warty light-grey bark trunked trees stretch up 15 to 20 feet at maturity with long drooping branches. Evergreen leaves sporting smooth tops and fuzzy bottoms grow along side odorless flowers of greenish yellow coloring. Baseball sized round fruit become yellowish-golden when ripe and have a bitter sweet flavor. Take care when picking the fruit as they bruise easily and any bruised skin will blacken and the tasty flesh below turns bitter. Sapote is frequently planted among Central American coffee plantation as shade for the crops.
