Sacred Flame of the Forest Tree (butea monosperma)

Brilliant scarlet red, firm, beak shaped flowers bloom in massive abundance giving this spectacular tree the appearance of glowing with flames. Also referred to as a Parrot tree for the shape of the flower petals, the Butea Monosperma is a truly unique tree as the majority of the tree can be used for various helpful purposes. The wood of the tree is extremely durable under water and can be carved into ladles and spoons, leaves are sturdy and make for excellent small plates, gum from the tree is used in cooking and dye is obtained from the flowers. What a useful tree to have growing in your garden and perfect for focal point plantings. Slow to grow the Parrot tree can reach 50 feet at maturity and will typically only grow a few feet a year.
