Elephants Ear Tree (enterolobium cyclocarpum)

Highly contorted, palm sized, semi-circular uniquely different thick seedpods hang like hundreds of ears from the branches in late fall, rattling in the breeze. Small greenish-white flowers, visited heavily by bees, appear in globular clusters and cover the canopy in the spring. Appearing months later, the slow to grow, developing fruit is bright green at first and transforms into the dark brown pods that will collect on the ground, under the canopy upon ripening. Grown in full sun the ear tree can reach heights of up to 75 feet with contorted and weeping branches covered in feathery pinnate leaves. This tree is an ornamental oddity that no southern landscape should be without.
