Brazilian Grapetree (myrciaria jaboticaba)

Alien, this shrubby 3 to 5 foot tree spectacularly produces white flowers from its trunks that slowly develop into fruit. The rather conspicuous fruit, on every trunk, is round with a smooth, tough skin that is very glossy green and slowly transforms to almost purple black when ripe. Similar to a Muscadine grape in texture and taste, the pulp is translucent white to rose tinted and juicy. Once ripe the fruit begins to ferment within 3 days so they are either eaten fresh from the tree or made into jams and jellies.
