Ancient Asian Bael Fruit Tree (aegle marmelos)

Cultivated in the temple gardens of India, Aegle has been found growing in regions where temps rise to 120F and drop to 27F. Full grown trees can reach 40 to 50 feet tall and have a thick, soft bark and spiny branches. The hard shelled fruit develops from clusters of greenish yellow, fragrant flowers and is often used to make a sweetened drink similar to lemonade. Fruit may take up to 11 months to ripen, making this virtually ever-bearing and can be very large.
